Frequently asked questions
- What does chmod 755 mean?
- It means the owner can read, write and execute (7), while group and others can only read and execute (5). The tool shows this as rwxr-xr-x.
- How do I convert symbolic permissions to numbers?
- Type the symbolic form such as rw-r--r-- into the Symbolic field, or simply tick the read, write and execute boxes for owner, group and others.
- When should I use 644 instead of 755?
- Use 644 for regular files, since they usually do not need the execute bit, and 755 for directories and scripts that must be runnable.
- Does it handle special bits like setuid or sticky?
- Not directly. The tool works with the three standard permission digits; the leading digit used for setuid, setgid and the sticky bit is not calculated.
