Frequently asked questions
- When should I URL-encode text?
- Whenever you put user input into a query string or path. Spaces, ampersands, question marks, hash signs and non-Latin characters all have special meaning in URLs and must be percent-encoded.
- Does it encode the whole URL or just the value?
- It applies encodeURIComponent to the entire input, so reserved characters like slashes and colons are encoded too. That is ideal for parameter values; encode each URL part separately if you need to keep the structure.
- How does decoding treat the plus sign?
- During decoding, a plus sign is converted to a space, matching how form-encoded query strings behave.
- Does it support Unicode?
- Yes. Chinese characters, emoji and accented letters are encoded as UTF-8 percent sequences and decoded back correctly.
